The beauty industry is trending toward “edible” ingredients. Following sweets and fruits, dermatologists began to study how our favorite cereal porridge can be good for our skin.
We have repeatedly been convinced that if an ingredient is good for our body, it is sure to be good for our skin. Colloidal oatmeal, which has excellent skin-soothing properties, is no exception.
“For centuries, this ingredient has been used to treat skin barrier conditions, including dryness, contact dermatitis, and eczema,” says Corey L. Hartman, MD, dermatologist, and founder of Skin Wellness. Oat powder, first and foremost, is good because it’s completely safe for the epidermis and helps relieve inflammation as quickly as possible.
The FDA boldly calls colloidal oatmeal the ultimate protective ingredient for skin. “Its biggest benefit is that it helps the skin retain moisture. When applied to the skin, the ingredient helps strengthen the protective barrier,” explains certified dermatologist Ife Rodney, MD. Due to its powerful soothing effect, it is also used in products after insect bites.
Does oatmeal have any drawbacks? “I don’t see any disadvantages,” admits Dr. Hartman. The only contraindication is an allergy to gluten, which can provoke irritation and dry skin.
