Sulfur has a huge number of benefits for the skin. “It can be found in rocks and minerals (especially in volcanic areas) as well as in the human body,” says dermatologist Geeta Yadav. It is one of the most abundant elements in our bodies and is essential for DNA repair.
Sulfur is mostly known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. “When used in care, sulfur absorbs excess oil that causes acne, drying the surface of the skin and clearing pores,” explains certified dermatologist Marina Peredo.
In addition, products containing sulfur are mild exfoliators, helping to treat rosacea and eczema. “It minimizes inflammation and destroys bacteria,” Marina Peredo continues. Because of its excellent exfoliating properties, sulfur is often added to dandruff shampoo formulations.
“In over-the-counter cosmetic products, you can find sulfur in concentrations of 3 to 10 percent.”

How often should you use sulfur creams? “It’s recommended to apply them at night two to three times a week– this will help absorb excess sebum,” Ramanadham notes.
