Dermatologists tell why it's so important to watch out for the skin's protective barrier

Recently, we have been hearing more and more about the important role of the skin barrier. The hydrolipid mantle not only resists external stimuli but also protects our skin from premature wrinkles and dryness.

Dermatologists recently made the sensational claim that your skin type doesn’t really matter-it’s the condition of your hydrolipid mantle that matters. “The skin barrier carries a lot of value because it’s the first thing aggressive irritants from the environment encounter,” says Dr. Barb Paldus, founder of Codex Beauty Labs.

What factors affect the quality of the skin’s protective barrier? “Stress, pollution, exposure to UV rays, blue light-all of these can compromise its condition,” says Dr. Murad, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Murad company. Fortunately, with cells constantly renewing, you have every chance to turn back the clock and prevent future damage.

To know that your skin barrier is not at its best, all you have to do is pay attention to several factors. “Beware of signs such as redness, flaking, tightness, itching, coarseness of certain areas of skin, and lots of fine lines and rashes-all signs of a compromised protective barrier. They can appear in certain areas of the face and body,” continues Dr. Murad.

The easiest way to restore the hydrolipid mantle is by adjusting your daily care routine. “Try cosmetic products with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients retain moisture and surround each cell with lipids, making your skin nourished and hydrated. You also need good anti-inflammatory products rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E,” explains Dr. Murad.
