There are only seven classic nail shapes, but the rectangular one is the most versatile. Whether you choose a matte or “raindrops” manicure, it will look stylish with this shape in any case.

“The rectangular shape is easy to do at home and is suitable for both light and dark colours of nail polish,” says Juanita Huber-Millett, founder of nail bar Townhouse. To replicate this manicure, all you need to do is arm yourself with special scissors, a nail file, and nail polish.

First, trim your nails straight across the plate to get a square shape. “Then take a file to slightly round the corners and remove any harshness,” Juanita continues. Avoid strong pressing movements and instead use the ‘long strokes’ technique. By the way, if you have a rectangular shape, you can easily turn it into an almond-shaped or oval shape with just a nail file.
