We consider the main trends of the season and recharge ourselves with the spring mood. After a year that can be called an unprecedented one, many experts are wondering how beauty will find its place in 2021.

This season, designers and creatives have responded to it on catwalks and digital platforms. From New York to Milan to Instagram, radiant skin, minimal makeup, and– surprise– lipstick are used as narratives.

Spring/Summer 2021 fashion weeks looked a little different this year than we’re used to, but brands have gotten creative with everything from staging to models’ makeup. This year’s runway shows included digital shows, catwalks with no human models, and brands putting out images with no catwalks at all. Fashion Weeks always showcase the best of the best, but this year we have an added bonus: we can see makeup artists show some truly innovative ideas.

The genius minds of makeup artists such as Pat McGrath, Isamaya Ffrench and Tom Sapin, and many others have shown us everything from bold lips and blue eyelids to smoky eyes. Whether you’re looking for some everyday makeup ideas or quirky tricks to add drama to your look, there really is a lot to choose from this season.

1. Skin glow

When was the last time you put on full makeup? If your answer was more than a month ago, you are not alone. This season, the runways have been dominated by “natural” faces with finely honed tone and relaxed eyeshadow (if any). “The spring 2021 makeup trend aims for light makeup,” explains YSL Beauty national makeup artist Noor Agha.

Yudong Choi, Victoria Beckham, and Jason Wu taught lessons on how to glow. You can achieve this effect even if your skin does not naturally glow from the accumulated power of care. A radiance balm or an intense serum will enhance your appearance.

2. Natural glamor

Over the past decade, eyebrows have evolved in a variety of ways, from sculpted “Instagram eyebrows” to so-called soapy ones. The Rodarte runway recently found a balance: an upturned arch with natural transitions. This is in line with the no-makeup, natural glamor trend that analysts predict will be its biggest in spring 2021.

“Eyeliner and mascara will continue to be the staple of any makeup,” says Agha.

3. Colors of the rainbow

“The spring trend will definitely be joyful colors!” Agha says, pointing to pink, yellow, blue and green. “These colors fit so well and you will definitely see them before your eyes.” We love Ulla Johnson’s version, which uses dusty rose eyeshadow and natural lip colors.

The Bora Aksu show once again made us remember about “kissing lips”, raising this trend to a new level– at the show, the models had a bright fuchsia color under transparent masks. “In addition, lip balms in a natural shade are trending now, and they will remain in trend in the spring,” notes Agha. It is very easy to apply it right before a videoconference meeting or under a mask to keep your lips hydrated.

4. Bold lips

Yes, the balms are good. But in 2021 we will see a lipstick renaissance. “As for the lips, there is a clear emphasis on nude shades,” says Agha. “But the trend is also going to be a mix of bright and bold hues.”

Max Mara offered several opaque lip tints, but Tom Ford’s hot pink literally won hearts. And, of course, don’t forget that the classic red lipstick will never go out of style.

5. Orange

Pantone has declared Ultimate Gray (practical and solid gray) and Illuminating (warming optimistic) as the main colors of 2021, but we are focusing on bright orange. Take, for example, the tangerine lips at Versace, the faded peach tones at Louis Vuitton, and the delicate sunset tones at Burberry by makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench.
