When it comes to coffee, one instantly associates it with vigor and energy– the same effect it has on the skin. “Caffeine wakes it up a little bit,” says dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D. The ingredient also has a vasoconstrictor effect and therefore is a must for those who suffer from redness.

“It’s a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free-radical damage,” says Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat. Still, the component’s main benefit is that it is endowed with a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and helps improve microcirculation. “Coffee also makes the other active ingredients more effective,” adds cosmetic chemist Ginger King.

In what products should one look for caffeine first? “You find it in eye creams because it has the ability to calm the skin and help reduce puffiness,” Robinson says. And nowadays, products with caffeine are available for just about every part of the body so much so that cosmetic manufacturers have fallen in love with its tonic properties.
